Classification of literature

In ancient Greece, literature was divided into two main categories ,
tragedy and comedy.  
Nowadays the are different genres of Literature
The most important  genres of literature are:

Poetry, Drama, Prose, Nonfiction, Fiction , Folktale

Poetry:-


This is considered to be the oldest form of literature. Before writing was invented, people use to tell oral stories in some sort of poetic form to make them easier to remember and to recite.
Nowadays people write poetry according the rules and regulation used for poetry. Not every written things are considered to be poetry, it must have different syllables, rhymes, number of stanza depending upon the nature of the poetry.
There are different types of poetry which include Sonnets, Ballad, Ode and Haiku etc

Prose:-

A kind of written text that isn’t poetry. It is also called Non-poetic writing.
It is  written in complete sentences and organized in paragraphs. In poetry a person should focus in rhyming and syllables sounds, while in prose a person tends to focus on plot and characters.

The most important types of prose are novels and short stories, while other types include letters, diaries and journals.

Drama:-

Dramas are usually called plays which are performed on stage by different actors.
It is the dialogue between the characters which include Protagonist and Antagonist. Since dramas are meant to be acted out in front of an audience, it’s hard to fully appreciate them when looking only at pages of text.
There are different factors which leads to formation of drama. It include plot, characters, playwright, background scene.


Non-Fiction:-

Non-fiction is a broad category that is a type of prose and includes many different sub-genres. Non-fiction can be creative, such as the personal essay, such as the scientific paper. Sometimes the purpose of non-fiction is to tell a story (hence the autobiography), but most of the time the purpose is to pass on information and give information to the reader about certain facts, ideas, and/or issues.
Poetry and Prose belong to this super set which are genres related to reality mainly and often tells the truth

Some genres of non-fiction include biographies, autobiographies, histories, textbooks, travel books, newspapers, self-help books, and literary criticism etc.


Fiction:-

This is one of the most important genres of literature. In fiction all the characters are imaginary and all the plots and events can be self made.This genre is often divided into five sub genres: 
fantasy, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, mystery, and science fiction.

Folktale :-

Another beloved genre of literature is folktale. Folktale, which is also referred to as mythology, tells stories of originally oral literature and are meant to pass on particular moral lessons. These tales often have a timeless quality, dealing with common concerns that are relevant despite the time period.
