The word “ sonnet ” has been derived from Italian word “ sonetto ” which itself has been derived from “ suono ” meaning a sound.
A short story in verse is called sonnet.
A poem consisting of fourteen lines is called sonnet.
It is also known as quatorzain,
All sonnets are quatorzain, but not all quatorzains are sonnets.
Types of sonnets:-
The following are some of the types of sonnet.
#1:- Petrarchan sonnets :-
These are named after an Italian poet of 14th century called Francesco Petrarch.
the Petrarch sonnets consisted of fourteen lines , divided into octave and sestet.
Octave contain eight lines while Sestet contain six lines.
Rhyming scheme :-
Rhyming scheme of Petrarchan sonnets is,
ABBA, ABBA, CDE, CDE .
Two poets , Thomas Wyatt and Earl of Surrey mainly translated Italian sonnets. Sir Philip Sydney`s sequence “Astrophal” and “ Stellar ”started a vogue of sonnet sequences.
#2:- Shakespearean sonnets:-
These sonnets were published in the era of Queen Elizabeth, so these were called Elizabethan sonnets or English sonnets.
These sonnets have fourteen lines divided into three quatrains and a couplet. each line contain ten syllables phrased in iambic pentameter.
Rhyming scheme :-
Rhyming scheme of these sonnets is,
ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG.
#3:- Spencerian sonnets :-
It was just a variation in the Shakespearean sonnets containing three quatrain and a couplet.
Amoretti is his famous collection of sonnets.
Rhyming scheme :-
ABAB, BCBC, CDCD, EE.
#4:- Miltonic sonnets :-
These sonnets are also an evolution of Shakespearean sonnets.
His famous sonnet is
When i consider gow my light is spent .
