Organs of speech. Respiratory system. Phonatory system. Articulatory system.

Organs of speech:- 

We speak on daily basis producing different types of speech sounds due to different organs. As we have discussed the phonetics and phonology, now we are going to discuss the organs of speech sounds.
The organs of speech consists of respiratory system, phonatory system and articulatory system.

The respiratory system:-

This organ system consists of lungs, trachea, and muscles of the chest.
When the air stream mechanism is used to push air out, it is called egressive.
When the air stream mechanism is used to draw air in, it is called ingressive.
We mostly produce sounds during inhalation or by ingressive method.


Phonatory system:-


It consists of lyrics which is also known as voice box, vocal cords which is mainly used to manipulate pitch and volume.
The opening between the cords is called glottis,
And above glottis there is epiglottis which prevent food from entering the trachea.
Sounds are produced due to the vibrations of vocal cords. There are two kinds of sounds produced based on the opening and closing of glottis.


Voiceless sounds:-

Sound that are produced with the wide open glottis are called voiceless sounds.

f, k, s, p, t, ch, sh, th (thick) are voiceless sounds.

Voiced sounds:-

Sounds that are produced when the vocal cords vibrate for call voiced sounds.

All the remaining sounds are voiced sounds.

Articulatory system:-


This comprises the nose, the tongue, the teeth, the lips and the entire roof of the mouth, which include the teeth ridge, hard palate, soft palate(velum) and uvula
